The Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University and global anti-poverty nonprofit Oxfam America have agreed to a five-year partnership focused on collaborations in research, professional development, guest lectures and events.

For the Sanford School, the partnership will be managed by the Duke Center for International Development (DCID), led by Indermit Gill. DCID was founded at Duke in 1985, and offers a Master of International Development Policy (MIDP) degree as well as executive education and global development policy consulting. The MIDP program is a unique mid-career graduate degree for professionals working in international development.

Oxfam America’s research and advocacy work on humanitarian issues, climate, and extractive industries and aid effectiveness is particularly relevant to the interests and experiences of MIDP fellows, most of whom come to Duke from developing and middle-income countries around the world.

“The partnership with Oxfam America will be a great opportunity for graduate students at Sanford,” Gill said. “It’s a chance to hear directly from researchers and policy advocates who are working day-in and day-out on some of the most pressing global issues of our time.”

Oxfam America Director of Strategic Partnerships Barbara Durr will coordinate the organization’s engagement efforts.

“This partnership allows Oxfam and the Sanford School to bring together some of our sharpest and most dedicated minds,” said Durr. “This kind of collaboration and information sharing is central to Oxfam’s mission to address the global policies and systems that keep people trapped in poverty.”

In the first year of the partnership, Gill and Durr expect to coordinate Oxfam expert lectures in graduate student classes at Sanford, host Oxfam experts as “practitioners in residence” to support professional development of Sanford graduate students, and facilitate the exchange of guest experts for Duke and Oxfam events. Faculty from Duke and Oxfam staff are already exploring potential research collaborations on topics ranging from food policy to environment to global value chains.
