Sanford Professors Named to Distinguished Chairs

Two Sanford professors were appointed to named chairs this spring.

Subhrendu Pattanayak

At the annual University Distinguished Professors dinner, Subhrendu Pattanayak was honored as the inaugural Oak Foundation Environmental and Energy Policy Professor, effective July 1. He holds appointments in public policy, global health, environmental science, and economics.

His research focuses on the interconnections of policy, energy use, health and the environment through such projects as the Cookstove Initiative. He leads the Energy Access Project, which seeks to find ways to meet the energy needs of the world’s poorest communities. Nicholas Carnes

Nicholas Carnes has a three-year appointment as the Creed C. Black Associate Professor of Public Policy and Political Science and was selected as a member of Duke’s Bass Society of Fellows. Bass Fellows are nominated by Duke professors for excellence in both research and undergraduate teaching.

Carnes researches American politics, economic and social class inequality, political representation and legislative decision-making. He is the author of the book White-Collar Government: The Hidden Role of Class in Economic Policy Making. His second book, The Cash Ceiling: Why Only the Rich Run for Office—and What We Can Do About It, is scheduled for publication by Princeton University Press in September 2018.
