Research with Real-World Impact
His research expertise lies in health economics, with a focus on the behavior of healthcare providers and the implications of public policies on health outcomes, particularly for vulnerable populations. His work delves into crucial issues such as mental health and substance use, examining questions like whether specific providers are more effective in improving mental health or the impacts of physicians in the opioid crisis. or the impacts of providing income support to those with mental disabilities.
“I hope that my research can bring awareness to important, yet understudied issues, as well as inform public policies that can improve the health and well-being of people,” Zhang said.
His close collaboration with the Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention exemplifies his commitment to practical, impactful research. At Duke, with its network of VA researchers and facilities, Zhang says he aims to continue his research and disseminate this vital work.
A Journey from Vancouver to Academia
Born to immigrant parents, Dr. Jonathan Zhang moved to a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, at the age of three. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in subjects that required analytical thinking.
“Growing up, I always gravitated toward quantitative topics like math and sciences, which is why I first majored in statistics in undergrad. I took some economics courses as electives and quickly realized the power in using quantitative methods to tackle practical and important real-world problems,” Zhang said.
As he explored deeper into the subject, this newfound interest propelled him to Stanford University, where he completed his PhD in economics. A particularly influential class in health economics revealed to him the vast potential and policy relevance of this field, setting the stage for his career focus in health policy research.
A Personal Drive for Health Economics
The catalyst for his entry into health economics was a graduate course at Stanford, which showcased the field's breadth, the uniqueness of health data, and its critical policy importance. His interest in researching mental health was further shaped by his personal experiences. Zhang’s own journey with mental health and psychotherapy, as well as the experiences of those close to him, have deeply influenced his research trajectory.
Reflecting on his youth in Vancouver, a city at the heart of the North American opioid crisis, has also driven him to focus on underprivileged populations. His recent work, addressing issues like the opioid crisis in British Columbia, mental health in Ontario, and the economic mobility of immigrants to Canada, highlights his commitment to topics that resonate both personally and broadly.
Excitement for the Future at Sanford
Joining the Sanford School marks a significant milestone in his career. Having spent his academic and professional life within economics departments, Zhang now eagerly anticipates the interdisciplinary environment that Sanford offers.
“I most look forward to teaching and mentoring the next generation of public policy graduates, interacting with new colleagues from a wide range of disciplines, and attending Sanford’s many lectures, forums, and events,” Zhang said.

Beyond the Classroom
Outside of his academic pursuits, he is an avid runner and hiker. For Zhang, he says running is more than a physical activity; it’s a way to explore new cities and experience the world from a unique perspective. The empowerment he feels from covering great distances or reaching new heights parallels the drive and determination he brings to his professional life.
