A Childhood Letter to Coach K Led to a Duke Dream Come True

For Blake Sbrocco, earning a Duke degree wasn't just an academic achievement—it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream inspired by family, Duke Basketball, and Coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Growing up in Texas, Blake's grandfather was a devoted Duke fan. Some of Blake's favorite childhood memories are watching games and even traveling with his grandfather to Cameron Indoor Stadium to watch the Blue Devils play. Those experiences sparked a lifelong dream of one day attending Duke.

At just nine years old, Blake even wrote a letter to Coach K that ended with these words: "I can't wait to put on a jersey with 'D' and a 'U' and a 'K' and an 'E.' I will continue to do my best and work my hardest until I am old enough to go to college. See you in 8 years. Still can't wait."

Years later, that dream became reality. Blake earned his Master of National Security Policy (MNSP) from Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy in 2026. Designed for working professionals, the hybrid program combines online coursework with immersive on-campus residencies, allowing leaders from across government, the military, and the private sector to learn together while continuing their careers.

A city council member in Bee Cave, Texas, Blake wanted to better understand how national security policy in Washington affects communities across America. One of the most meaningful parts of the program, he says, was learning alongside members of the military and national security professionals whose perspectives challenged and expanded his own.

Before beginning the program, Blake was able to tell his grandfather that he would earn his Duke degree in his honor. When Duke Sanford program leaders learned the family's story, they arranged for Coach K to personally call Blake's grandfather the day before he passed away—a gesture Blake says perfectly reflects the compassion, leadership, and sense of community that have made Duke so special to him since childhood.

This is more than a story about graduate school. It's a story about family, perseverance, leadership, and a dream that came full circle at Duke.
