I've been at The New York Times for more than three decades and have always been drawn to on-the-ground stories that tell a big tale in an intimate way. A fabulous example is a piece last year by Farah Stockman on a factory worker in Indiana and how her plant closure cut to the very core of her being in terms of self esteem, making a living and caring for her family. In my course, students will look at the best of that kind of reporting, hear from reporters who do it well and learn to report and write stories that describe the country from the ground level up.
