The Intersection of Art and Democracy

Visual artist and social activist Federica Donato will join us as this spring's 2023 Crown Distinguished Lecture speaker and visiting scholar. Federica is best known internationally for her commitment to promoting social causes and championing human rights. She is the President of Art4Humanity Foundation, founded on the belief that art and education can pave the way for a profound cultural shift to forge more balanced, inclusive, and knowledge-based societies. Art 4 Humanity is grounded in the belief that art can promote intellectual stimulation and positively impact society from an economic, social, health, and environmental standpoint. She advocates for equity, inclusion, and human dignity for all. Hailing from Italy and currently living in Miami, Florida, Donato uses art and the camera lens to tell a story and empower vulnerable communities by shining a focus on issues that the world needs to see. Donato will speak at Duke as part of the Crown Lecture in Ethics Series. Endowed by Lester Crown, this prestigious lecture is open to the public and the entire Duke University campus. This lecture series brings speakers to campus to discuss the ethical implications of issues in the arts, sciences, medicine, business and other fields. It was conceived to be the centerpiece of Sanford School's efforts to guide students, faculty, and public opinion the critical importance of ethical decision making in the professions and public life. Crown is an enterprising businessman, active civic leader, and chairman emeritus of Henry Crown and Company.
