Hicks serves as the 35th Deputy Secretary of Defense. She is the first Senate-confirmed woman to serve in this role. Prior to becoming Deputy Secretary, Dr. Hicks held the position of senior vice president, Henry A. Kissinger chair, and Director of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic International Studies.
