Careers in Child and Family Policy: Policy + Law/Medicine/Business

Love child and family policy but also interested in law/medicine/business? Come hear from Duke dual-degree graduate students about their career paths thus far and what they hope to do with their dual degrees. We will be joined by Allyson Barkley, currently pursuing her JD/MPP, Madeleine Brown, currently pursuing her MD/MPP, and Anna Walsh, currently pursuing her MBA/MPP. Prior to graduate school, our panelists worked in state government, public health through AmeriCorps, as a PeaceCorp volunteer and in nonprofits. They will share how they started their careers, what drove them to pursue dual degrees, the benefits and challenges of their programs, and how their dual degrees will help them positively impact children and families after graduation. Short Bios: Allyson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in Global Studies and Hispanic Literatures and Cultures. She spent a year and a half working in refugee resettlement in Durham, North Carolina before moving to Raleigh to join Attorney General Josh Stein's reelection campaign. Allyson is particularly passionate about exploring the role of state and local government in social policy change. Maddie attended the University of Richmond in Virginia for her undergraduate education in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, with minors in Healthcare Studies and Dance. Following graduation she served in the National Health Corps (AmeriCorps) in Pittsburgh, PA as a Patient Navigator at the Birmingham Free Clinic, helping patients to navigate the complex system of insurance, pharmaceutical companies, and specialty care referrals with a focus on underserved populations, social drivers of health, and health equity. Anna obtained her B.A. in International Affairs from George Washington University. As a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, she worked extensively with women and people with disabilities on public health and economic development projects. Prior to becoming a Sanford student, she managed nonprofit operations and advised philanthropists in issue areas ranging from early childhood health to rainforest conservation. Anna is passionate about equitable economic development and affordable housing. This speaker series is for Duke students who want to learn more about careers in child and family policy.
