Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we live, work, and govern. With this rapid evolution comes an urgent need for thoughtful, ethical, and effective policy solutions. At Sanford, we are leading this conversation, ensuring that AI serves the public good through rigorous research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and principled leadership.

That’s why I’m proud to share that Sanford is at the forefront of a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI and a coalition of leading universities to shape the responsible use of AI in research. This initiative is not just about understanding AI’s impact—it’s about guiding its development in ways that enhance democracy, protect privacy, and foster innovation for all.

Our faculty and researchers are tackling some of the most pressing AI policy challenges: How do we create safeguards against bias in AI decision-making? How do we ensure transparency and accountability in AI-driven systems? How do we craft policies that encourage responsible AI development while balancing innovation and regulation? These are the questions that will define the next era of public policy, and Sanford is leading the charge.

A key driver of this work is Sanford’s Tech Policy Lab, a hub for cutting-edge research and engagement on technology policy issues. Led by Professor David Hoffman, a leading expert in AI governance, the Lab is at the forefront of efforts to develop responsible AI frameworks and inform policymakers at the highest levels. Through initiatives like this, we are bridging the gap between technology and policy, ensuring AI advancements align with ethical and democratic principles.

The strength of this work lies in collaboration. Our partnerships span disciplines, bringing together experts in public policy, law, ethics, and computer science. We are equipping our students—the next generation of policy leaders—with the tools to navigate this complex landscape, ensuring they are prepared to shape AI’s future with integrity and insight.

Sanford has always been committed to solving real-world policy challenges. Our leadership in AI policy is an extension of that mission, reinforcing our role as a hub for innovation and ethical governance in a rapidly changing world. I look forward to seeing the impact of our research, partnerships, and advocacy as we continue to drive the conversation on responsible AI.

This is a moment of both challenge and opportunity. AI is here to stay, and at Sanford, we are making sure it works for everyone.

Warm regards,
Manoj Mohanan, Interim Dean
