Price Receives Local Highway Dedication Honor

 October 2, 2024

The Interstate 40 and U.S. 15-501 interchange in Durham is now officially named the "Congressman David Price Interchange".

The North Carolina Department of Transportation hosted a dedication ceremony in August at Chapel Hill Town Hall, recognizing David Price’s immense contributions to transportation and infrastructure in North Carolina over his distinguished career.

Price, who retired from Congress in 2022 after serving 17 terms representing North Carolina’s 4th District, has long been a champion of transportation projects in the region. His work with the House Appropriations Committee and the Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development brought substantial improvements to transit across the state, directly benefiting the Durham and Chapel Hill communities.

In addition to his legislative accomplishments, Price has been a dedicated faculty member at Sanford, sharing his expertise with students and faculty alike during the formative years of Duke's Institute of Policy Sciences and Public Affairs (later becoming the Sanford School of Public Policy) and now upon his return to Sanford in 2023. He has lived in nearby Chapel Hill for decades after earning his degree from the University of North Carolina in 1961.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, alongside other dignitaries and public officials, praised Price during the ceremony for his "compassionate brilliance" and lifelong focus on using government to improve people's lives. Cooper remarked, “David knew that every detail in complex legislation ended up affecting the lives of people,” highlighting Price’s focus on the human impact of his work.

The interchange's renaming marks a fitting tribute to Price's legacy, recognizing his longtime dedication to both his district and the people of North Carolina.

Sanford is proud to celebrate this honor with him and looks forward to continuing his legacy of public service through the education and mentorship he has provided to generations of public policy leaders.
