Sanford is pleased to announce the appointment of faculty member Suzanne Katzenstein, JD, PhD, as the new Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). Her term is set to begin on July 1, 2025, and will extend through June 30, 2028. Dr. Katzenstein will oversee the Public Policy major, one of Duke's most popular undergraduate degree programs, known for its rigorous curriculum and commitment to preparing students for impactful careers.

Interim Dean Manoj Mohanan expressed his enthusiasm for Katzenstein’s appointment and gratitude for the outgoing DUS, Nathan Boucher. "We are thrilled to have Dr. Katzenstein step into the Director of Undergraduate Studies role," said Mohanan. "Her experience with a variety of forms of undergraduate teaching and engagement, dedication to students, and insightful approach to policy education make her an ideal leader to guide our esteemed undergraduate program. I am also deeply grateful to Nathan Boucher for his outstanding service and commitment as DUS. His leadership has been instrumental in maintaining the strength and appeal of the Public Policy major, particularly his focus on innovative teaching and student support."

Katzenstein is a Lecturer of Public Policy and teaches a core class in the major, Introduction to Policy Analysis. She also teaches seminars in the Hart Leadership Program, acts as faculty advisor to the undergraduate Patman Political Engagement Project, and is a Hart Fellowship Writing Coach. Before joining Sanford, Katzenstein served as Program Director of the Duke Human Rights Center at the Kenan Institute for Ethics, with a focus on creative pedagogy and co-curricular programming at the undergraduate level.

As a lawyer and political scientist, Katzenstein brings a distinctive skillset to this role from a career focused on human rights and corporate responsibility. This career has nurtured a deep commitment to undergraduate education in this role.

"I am honored and excited to take on the role of Director of Undergraduate Studies at Sanford," said Katzenstein. "The Public Policy program offers a vital platform for students to develop the analytical skills and ethical grounding needed to address complex societal challenges. I look forward to working with our exceptional students, faculty, and staff to continue fostering a vibrant and impactful learning community and to further enhance the undergraduate experience."

Katzenstein will succeed Nathan Boucher, who has served with distinction as Director of Undergraduate Studies. Boucher’s tenure has been marked by a steadfast commitment to student success and curriculum development, ensuring the program remains responsive to the evolving landscape of public policy.

Reflecting on his time as DUS, Nathan Boucher commented, "It has been a privilege to serve as the Director of Undergraduate Studies and to work alongside such bright and passionate students. I am incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together in enriching the academic journey of our undergraduates. I am confident that Dr. Katzenstein will bring excellent leadership and fresh perspectives to the program. I wish her all the best in this new role and look forward to the continued success of Sanford's undergraduates."
