Galvanizing Sanford’s Commitment to Policy Solutions

These are unprecedented times for public policy scholars and practitioners. Political polarization and rapid shifts in the policy landscape, including what we might expect from our institutions of governance, have left people searching for answers. There is an acute need for practical, balanced, and forward-thinking policy insights that cut through the noise. Despite the chaotic policymaking environment we face, Sanford continues to have a critical role to play in informing actionable, research-driven solutions.
Sanford has always been a place where policy is not just studied, but shaped. Our faculty, students, and alumni turn policy analysis and research into real-world impact. Today, that mission is more important than ever. Through rigorous research, hands-on learning, and a commitment to civil discourse, Sanford is equipping future leaders with the tools to navigate uncertain times.
Research That Drives Action
Impactful research informs debates, influences decision-makers, and inspires change. Sanford’s faculty are tackling today’s most pressing issues—economic inequality, climate change, national security, and public health. Their work provides the evidence needed to guide responsible policymaking.
Just this month, Professors Phil Cook and Marc Jeuland published a new paper in PNAS on firearm policy and violence prevention that finds that Americans’ willingness to pay to reduce gun violence has been significantly underestimated in research that informed previous policies. This research can make a big difference in influencing policy on gun violence.
Educating the Next Generation of Policy Leaders
The challenges of today demand bold leadership tomorrow. Sanford’s students don’t just study policy; they engage with it. Through hands-on learning, internships, and direct collaboration with policymakers, they develop the skills to drive meaningful change.
Innovative teaching is key to this mission. Professor David Schanzer’s national security course uses game simulations to immerse students in real-world challenges. This interactive approach strengthens strategic thinking, ensuring students are prepared for the complexities of national security policymaking.
A Resource for the Public Good
At a time when trust in institutions is fragile, Sanford remains a source of credibility and expertise. Through public events, policy briefs, and collaborations with government and nonprofits, we ensure that research reaches those who need it most—policymakers, journalists, and community leaders.
Sanford also brings expert voices directly to the public through our award-winning Policy 360 podcast. Our latest episode features foreign policy and national security expert Professor Susan Colbourn, who discusses the significance of NATO and the allied nations in global security. These conversations foster informed public discourse and support fact-based policymaking.
The public policy questions taking shape around us are urgent, and the stakes are high. Sanford remains committed to leading in research, education, and policy engagement. Now, more than ever, public policy matters.
