Deondra Rose Named Finalist for Duke’s Judith Deckers Prize in Undergraduate Teaching

Sanford Professor Deondra Rose has been named one of 12 finalists for Duke University’s 2025 Judith Deckers Prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
The Judith Deckers Prize honors faculty who make exceptional contributions to undergraduate education at Duke. The award recognizes not only outstanding teaching but also mentorship, inclusivity, and a commitment to student growth. This year, more than 680 nominators—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—submitted 225 nominations, from which the university selected 12 finalists. In announcing her nomination, one supporter shared: “Beyond educating, Rose inspires and encourages students to pursue their boldest aspirations for positive change in the world and themselves.” (Duke Today article on the 2025 finalists) Three recipients of the award will be announced in early 2026, each receiving a $35,000 prize.
At Sanford and across Duke, Rose is widely recognized for her dedication to students and her ability to connect academic learning to real-world policy challenges. She holds appointments in Public Policy, History, and Political Science, and her scholarship examines how public policy shapes opportunities for equity and civic participation. Rose’s most recent book, The Power of Black Excellence (Oxford University Press), explores how higher education has influenced the political engagement of Black Americans. Beyond her research, she is deeply engaged in creating transformative learning experiences for undergraduates.
In September, Rose moderated the David M. Rubenstein Distinguished Lecture featuring U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, facilitating a thoughtful conversation on hope and humanity in politics. Her skill in guiding dialogue and connecting students with leaders in public life reflects the same curiosity and energy she brings to the classroom.
Rose’s recognition continues a proud Sanford tradition of excellence in undergraduate education. Catherine Admay, Senior Lecturer at Sanford, was one of the inaugural winners of the Judith Deckers Prize in 2024, honored for her innovative and compassionate teaching approach (read the story about Admay’s award).
