Colbourn Appointed Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations

Sanford is proud to announce that faculty member Susan Colbourn has been appointed as a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), effective July 2024. The CFR term member program is designed to engage rising leaders in international affairs, providing them with opportunities for mentorship, networking, and professional development over a five-year term.

Anna Gassman-Pines, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the Sanford School, congratulated Colbourn on the achievement, stating, “We are delighted that the Council on Foreign Relations has selected Dr. Colbourn as a term member! Her selection showcases her as a rising leader in international relations and underscores her prominence in the field.”

Susan Colbourn is an associate research professor in the Sanford School of Public Policy and the associate director of the Program in American Grand Strategy at Duke University. A diplomatic and international historian, she specializes in European security, the politics of nuclear weapons, and the history of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). She is the author of Euromissiles: The Nuclear Weapons That Nearly Destroyed NATO, published by Cornell University Press in November 2022.

Colbourn’s expertise and contributions to global policy will add depth to her participation in CFR’s dynamic initiatives, which foster dialogue and solutions on pressing international issues. Her appointment underscores Sanford’s commitment to shaping the next generation of global leaders.
