Development and Alumni Relations
Beth Gettys Sturkey returned to the Sanford School of Public Policy in July 2015 to become the Director of Development.
Beth served as Sanford’s Director of Advancement Services from 2008 to 2010, when the Sanford Institute became the Sanford School of Public Policy. In 2010 she was recruited by Dean Sam Wells to serve as Director of Development for Duke University Chapel. Even as she departed for the Chapel, she maintained a connection, as Dean Wells and the Chapel’s Director of Student Ministry Dr. Adam Hollowell taught courses at the Sanford School throughout her tenure at the Chapel. She is pleased to rejoin the Sanford Development & Alumni Relations staff.
She earned an A.B. in Music and English from Warren Wilson College, and an M.S. in Higher Education from The Florida State University. She began her development career at St. Olaf College, and subsequently served as Director of Reunion Giving for the Duke Annual Fund and as Major Gifts Officer for the Environmental Defense Fund.
As the Director of Development, she works closely with colleagues on the Development & Alumni Relations team to secure the support that will ensure the school’s continued excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
Beth has sung in choirs since childhood, and has been a member of the Duke Chapel Choir since 2000. She is an active member of the Congregation at Duke Chapel, and is grateful that the Congregation is comprised of members from the Duke community as well as the entire piedmont North Carolina region. She relishes the opportunity to travel, garden and cook. Though she was away for 19 years, living in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Minnesota, she was happy to return to her home state of North Carolina in 1999, where she makes a home in Durham with her husband Jeff and their beloved dog Jasmine.
