Heiss Receives ISTR Emerging Scholar Dissertation Award

Sanford School alumnus Andrew Heiss PhD’17 has received the 2018 Emerging Scholar Dissertation Award from the International Society for Third Sector Research (ISTR). The award is given biennially to the best dissertation pertaining to civil society, nonprofit organizations or philanthropy, and includes $1,000. His dissertation was chosen from 61 submitted from throughout the world. The award was presented at the ISTR Conference in Amsterdam on July 10.

Heiss’s dissertation was “Amicable Contempt: The Strategic Balance Between Dictators and International NGOs.” He was advised by Judith Kelley, dean of the Sanford School.
