Fifty years after Terry Sanford launched his campaign for governor of North Carolina, this symposium examines some of the most pressing concerns of his political career: poverty, education and racial inequality in North Carolina. During the afternoon, three panels of Sanford faculty, advocates and policymakers will explore the progress made to erase inequalities in North Carolina since the historic events of the early 1960s, as well as the challenges that remain.

Sanford Professor Robert Korstad and UNC-Chapel Hill professor James Leloudis will present their new book, To Right These Wrongs: The North Carolina Fund and the Battle to End Poverty and Inequality in 1960s America, about the work of the nonprofit North Carolina Fund, launched by Sanford. Our keynote speaker will talk about the challenges of governing and leadership. The symposium – the final event of the Sanford School Inaugural Series – also includes a networking reception, student poster sessions, and tours of the school’s new Terry Sanford photo exhibition.
